'Twas the

Night Before

Christmas!

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the breakfast bar with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

while visions of candy canes danced in their heads.

And Mama in her jammies,

and Papa not so hammy,

had just settled their brains for a long winter's...um...nap.

When out on the roof there arose such a patter,

Ms. En's Mommy sprang from her bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window she flew like a flash,

Ms. En's Daddy tore open the shutter, and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

gave the lustre of midday to objects below,

when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came,

and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

"Now Dasher! Now Dancer!
Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid!
On, Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"

As Fall leaves that before the wild winter winds fly,
when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky

so up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head and was turning around,
down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes--how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

'Twas the night before the night before Christmas and even the mice were busy.

Neutron peas - Tiny green objects in TV dinners that remain frozen even when the rest of the food has been microwaved beyond recognition.

I'm done with my Christmas baking. This morning after breakfast, I made three batches of peanut brittle. Two of the batches are for gifting...locally.

Today was the day that I needed to rack the wines. HTP helped me with the heavy lifting. From what I tasted so far (of course I sipped a bit from each type of wine...even though it's not ready), all the wines are going to taste just fine. The most beautiful wine is the Prickly Pear Cactus wine. Gorgeous!

My homemade cheese smells a bit like Limburger cheese. Eventually, it's supposed to end up tasting a bit like feta cheese. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm going to wait to try making kefeddar cheese (which would mean that I'd have to make another batch of cottage cheese. Right now I'm just going to concentrate on Christmas Eve and Christmas and baby-sitting my homemade cheese, rubbing it down with olive oil on a daily basis.

I made two batches of Italian pizzelle which is more than I planned on making but since I bothered to buy the anise extract, I figured I might as well use it. Aside from that, I've got plenty of eggs right now and Italian pizzelle uses eggs.

HTP took the Chevy into the shop to get an oil change. This meant that I followed HTP and the Chevy out to the shop in the Gator so HTP wouldn't be trapped for an hour while the Chevy was getting its oil changed and tires rotated. HTP and I used that hour to get something to eat for lunch. Neither of us had been to a Carls Jr. for years. HTP was impressed with his Star burger and the Western Star burger was bigger than I remembered. We'll have to go to Carls Jr. more often.

#1 Son and Santa - 1994

Word of the Day

Netoriety - A measure of one's notorious reputation throughout the Internet.

I'm starting to get into the Christmas spirit. Finally. Playing Christmas music with the church orchestra for two services helped. Baking Christmas cookies also helped somewhat but eating Christmas cookies, no matter how good they may taste, isn't doing much for my diet. Oh well...I'll worry about dieting next year. I still have/want to make my Italian Pizzelle and some peanut brittle. I was missing some key ingredients for both of these recipes, missing ingredients that I was able to pick up at the store on my way home from church. I also picked up the fixings for Christmas dinner....and munchies and snack items for a New Year's Eve celebration at home with HTP.

I didn't cover any of my plants last night. Thankfully, the weather prediction was accurate. It only got down to 35°F last night. Since it's only supposed to get down to 40°F tonight, and since last night's temperature was so accurately predicted, I'm not going to worry about covering any plants...at least not tonight. However, I plan to keep a daily weather eye out for future weather predictions. Right now, it looks like I may have to worry about next Saturday's overnight temperatures but one never knows when the weather predictions may change.

Word of the Day

Nerkle - A person who leaves their Christmas lights up all year.

HTP and I went to a wine and cheese social at the our community clubhouse last night. It was a BYOB party. $2 cover-charge at the door. This was a first for us. We normally don't participate in functions held at the clubhouse. I was amazed at how many people were there. It would have been a lot more fun if HTP and I had known any of them. Oh well, I brought a bottle of wine which I would have shared but it didn't look like anyone was passing around bottles. Everyone drank whatever they brought. I noticed that one guy brought a bottle of whisky that he was mixing with some 7-up that he brought along. Most people had fancy bags they were using to transport their bottles and wine glasses. If HTP and I attend the next wine and cheese social, a bag to transport the wine and glasses might be a good idea. We did bring along a little cooler with some ice and pop for HTP. HTP isn't a big wine drinker. They had plastic glasses but drinking wine out of a plastic glass...it just isn't the same. Oh well...next time I'll pack a couple of real glasses to bring with us...if there is a next time. It was good to just get out for an evening without spending a lot. Maybe I can talk some of the people we know in the neighborhood into going next time. Oh...and I should see if I can get some name tags for HTP and me from the HOA. Most of the people were wearing special name tags. HTP and I never got name tags because...well...we never bothered to get name tags when they were handing them out.

It was 37°F this morning when I woke up. Admittedly cold, but not freezing. Thank goodness. It's supposed to get down to 35°F tonight and I'm debating whether or not it might be wise to drag out the sheets to cover the more sensitive plants...maybe bring my herb pots inside for the night. If it only gets down to 35°F, the plants will be fine but the people who predict the temperatures aren't the people who will have to replace frozen plants while mourning their losses if the temperature dips a mere three degrees lower.

Word of the Day

Nerd hero - Any nerd-core artist or enthusiast who pretends to have mad skills with a guitar by displaying his/her Guitar Hero® guitar controller during concert, or by demonstrating his excellence in game.

I made more cookies. Sugar-free Almond Sugar Cookies. Actually, I've been experimenting with a recipe that Sis gave me which uses egg yolks. I always have plenty of egg yolks. Rather than waste them, I decided to experiment with using this recipe to make some Christmas sugar cookies (sans sugar). It worked out great! Very rich! My sister sent me an e-mail this morning that explained all the rules when it comes to calories and Christmas cookies. Since the cookies I "taste-tested" this morning were sugar-free, I figured...they were both calorie free. Oh...and I'm adding another rule to Cookie Rules. Colored decorettes and sugars don't count as sugar in sugar-free cookies since they're only there for decoration purposes.

Cookie Rules

If you eat a Christmas cookie fresh out of the oven, it has no calories
because everyone knows that the first cookie is the test and thus calorie free.

If you drink a diet soda after eating your second cookie, it also has no
calories because the diet soda cancels out the cookie calories (water has the
same properties here).

If a friend comes over while you're making your Christmas cookies and needs
to sample, you must sample with your friend. Because your friend's first
cookie is calorie free, rule #1 is yours also. It would be rude to let your
friend sample alone and, being the friend that you are, that makes your cookie
calorie free, as well.

Any cookie calories consumed while walking around will fall to your feet and
eventually fall off as you move. This is due to gravity and the density of the
caloric mass.

Any calories consumed during the frosting of Christmas cookies
will be used up because it takes many calories to lick excess
frosting from a knife without cutting your tongue.

Cookies colored red or green have very few calories. Red ones have three and
green ones have five - one calorie for each letter. (Make more red ones!)

Cookies eaten while watching "Miracle on 34th Street" have NO
calories because they are part of the entertainment package and not
part of one's personal fuel.

As always, cookie "pieces" contain no calories because the process of
breaking causes calorie leakage.

Any cookies consumed from someone else's plate have no calories since the
calories rightfully belong to the other person and will cling to their plate.
(We all know how calories like to CLING!)

Any cookies consumed while feeling stressed have no calories because cookies
used for medicinal purposes NEVER have calories. (It's a rule!)

Colored decorettes and sugars don't count as sugar in sugar-free cookies since they're only there for decoration purposes. Decorative sugars will not raise your blood sugar levels.

So...I had to sort through and delete the Spam and mark the good stuff as "This is not Spam" so it could continue on its merry way to my In Box. I'll have to check the webmail accounts more often. Word of the Day

Neonphancy - A fluorescent light bulb struggling to come to life.

I started decorating Christmas cookies yesterday...my brown sugar cookies. I'm not all that creative when it comes to decorating cookies...but I try. About the time I finished up the vanilla icing, my creative ideas ran out. I'd also run out of space to put the cookies while the icing dried long enough so that I could store them away in one of my cookie tins without the cookies gluing themselves together and making a mess. The frosting had set up enough by this morning but, I waited until this afternoon to open up the second tub of icing so I could finish up with decorating the rest of the brown sugar cookies. Still...I'm not all that creative. I didn't turn any of the Christmas tree cookies into bloody spear points. *sigh* I miss the bloody spear points that #1 Son used to make for me. I didn't make any aliens with green faces either....or frowny faces. *sigh* Maybe next year.

Neogenic - Having an attraction to bright lights.

The Russian teacakes are all baked. One batch, sugar free. I'll have to pack them away so HTP doesn't get hold of them before next week. I'm thinking about starting to decorate the brown sugar cookies next. After I decorate them, they'll need to set up for at least a day before I can pack them away without them getting all soft and sticking to each other.

We got about an inch of rain yesterday and overnight. They're predicting even more rain out of the next batch of storms coming through. I expect there will be some flooding in my backyard if we do get more rain. Although the sun has come out and the rain tapered off well before I dragged myself out of bed this morning, the ground is still wet and there are standing puddles on the concrete.

Gypsy and I missed our morning walk today. Maybe I'll take her out when I go to get the mail. I'll have to dump the rain out of the rain gauge so it'll be all set for the next weather system.

Negatile - An area of the bathroom floor where, somehow, the scale registers one to be five pounds lighter.

I baked Jan Hagel cookies yesterday. Just two batches. I made a regular batch of cinnamony Jan Hagel and a batch of sugar free almond flavored Jan Hagel. HTP prefers the almond flavored Jan Hagel so that's why that batch was sugar free. I baked brown sugar cookies today. They still need to be frosted and decorated but that can wait for later in the week. Though I only made a single recipe, I ended up with 12 dozen cookies. I still want to make Russian Teacakes (sugar free) but that will have to wait for another day....and another day for Italian Pizzelle. After that...I plan to hang up my baker's hat...well...maybe I'll make some peanut brittle but after that...

Memories of Christmas Goodies Past

Word of the Day

Narf - 1. The uncontrollable sound an idiot might make. 2. The word used when no other words will suffice. 3. An exclamation emitted when one's brain farts and sound deploys.

I started another batch of kefir milk which I plan to make into kefir-leban later this week. The cottage cheese that I made the other day (by mistake because I actually wanted to make congetella but...) tasted great in the lasagna (from scratch) that I made for dinner last night. It tasted and had the texture of ricotta cheese. I froze four two-serving portions for future meals and have another meal for HTP in the fridge for later this week. I had such good luck with the cottage cheese that I decided to expand my kefir horizons a bit. I'm using whole milk to make my kefir milk this time because I want to try my hand at using the resultant kefir-leban to make kefeddar cheese, a kefir version of cheddar cheese. Sis has been using her kefir whey to make sauerkraut and other things. Me? So far I've been using my kefir whey to fertilize my pomegranate tree despite the waste and the fact that Gypsy hates the smell. Sis is lots more creative than me.

I'm thinking about maybe doing some Christmas baking. I miss the smell of Christmas baking. I miss the doing, the baking. I miss sneaking a couple of cookies to munch on with my first cup of coffee in the morning. My body doesn't miss the calories but since I already have the ingredients, I may bake up a couple of batches of cookies...maybe tomorrow while I do laundry.

As a side note, my spell-checker doesn't like anything related to kefir.

MC Daughter and DD Daughter decorating the Christmas tree - 198?

Word of the Day

Muxup - To mix and muck things up at the same time.

HTP and I went out to an olive grove this morning after we finished eating breakfast. Fun. Queen Creek Olive Mill. We took their tour. The owner of the "mill" gave us the tour. He said that it started out as a hobby and then morphed into a business. They grow different types of olives in the grove and press their own olive oil. Extra virgen. He blends a Tuscan style olive oil from several different varieties of olives that he grows in his grove. They also had someone set up with wine-tasting before the tour. It was interesting how they served a really sharp cheddar cheese with the wine (pallet cleanser)which they had chunked and dredged in olive oil and sprinkled with a bit of cracked black pepper. Really good. After the tour, they served all kinds of olives and tapenades and olive oils with morsels of bread for dipping. They had a fun store where you can purchase everything that they make and things that local farmers produce. I purchased a small bottle of the special Tuscan style olive oil, some feta stuffed olives, and some kalamati olives. I also bought a couple bottles of one of the wines HTP and I had tasted. I was intrigued by the fact that it came from a small vineyard, limited quantities and distribution. I also picked up some local grown pistachios...hickory smoked. I would have bought more olives but I noted the other day at one of our grocery stores that you can purchase a variety of different olives in their deli section and they looked really good...and not so expensive. I may try some next time I'm there. Although other people were purchasing meals from the deli at the "mill" to enjoy at the tables set inside the store or on the tables set up outside, after tasting all the wonderful types of tapenades and olives and oils, we weren't hungry. HTP isn't a fan of this sort of outing but I had a lot of fun doing something that was outside our normal day to day.

Word of the Day

Musquirt - Water that comes out during the initial squirts of a mustard squeeze bottle.

Why is it that whenever I get my haircut, the gal at the beauty salon always makes my new hairdo look great and easy to style but the first time I shampoo at home....pffft? It never looks anything near the same when I style my own hair, nor as nice. I think it's another one of those times that you need at least another set of arms. Oh well...I'm letting my hair grow out to its natural color. Grey with white highlights. But this time I'm just going to deal/live with the skunk line which is getting wider and wider as I maintain my long hair. The gal at the beauty salon only cut off two inches this time, add that to the three inches she cut off when I got home to Arizona, my hair still reaches my shoulder blades. My hair grows fast. She tells me that all my natural color will be back in three or four months....haircuts. We'll see. HTP doesn't seem to mind the grey...much.

With a near constant sinus headache, I haven't felt like doing much. I haven't even plugged in my Christmas music. Gypsy has been letting me sit quietly and read...for the most part. When she's tired of napping at my side, she worms her way up, around my book, and sits on my chest and licks my face. Ewwww. It's kind of hard to read when you've got a dog licking your face.

#1 Son - Christmas 1987

Word of the Day

Murse - A male nurse.

I checked my archives this morning to see what sort of things I wrote on this day over the previous years that I've been blogging. This was done in the futile hope that I might, maybe, find inspiration for what I could write and do today. Checking my old archives had the benefit of making me feel like I'm way ahead when it comes to my Christmas planning this year. Of course, since I'm not doing any baking this year, and I'm not frantically wrapping presents to mail out because I'm not mailing out any packages this year, and I've got all my shopping done because I'm not buying much, my archives also made me feel a bit Grinchy. Maybe I'll make a few Christmas cookies....a very few Christmas cookies....maybe...next week.

I've got a cold...or...maybe I've got allergies. It doesn't seem to matter since the symptoms end up being about the same. Hopefully, the OTC medicine that I took will relieve some of the pressure so my eyes don't actually start to bleed....pardon the exaggeration. However, I will say that I love the new Puffs tissues with the Vicks scent. Kleenex used to make one like it. I think someone used them to wipe their eyes...even though they told people not to wipe their eyes with the mentholated tissues. I'm betting that this might be why they don't make them anymore. I really miss Kleenex's mentholated tissues. I haven't tried to wipe my eyes with these Puffs tissues but I didn't buy them to wipe my eyes. I bought them for the Vicks. They're not medicated...they just smell like Vicks...but that smell tends to be soothing when you've got a cold or your nose is running around the house. I'm sure it's all psychological but I can feel my sinuses clearing up...however, it's probably that the OTC medicine that I took might be starting to kick in.

Gypsy and I decided to forgo our morning walk. OK. It was my decision but since Gypsy managed to jar her right knee while running madly around the house this morning in a reckless manner (lots of yelping and a total refusal to use that leg for a good five minutes while I started to think about taking her to the vet), and I'm just not feeling like limping around the neighborhood either (the weather outside is frightful...cold for here and my joints are complaining), we're going to hang around and maybe start wrapping Christmas presents. Thankfully, Gypsy's knee is doing fine (no vet required)...but my joints still hurt.

Word of the Day

Murphyglobule - An inevitable glob of food that drips onto a clean white surface, often one's shirt.

As I poured myself a fresh cup of hot coffee this morning, I silently sent out a mental thank you to whoever it was that invented the timer mechanism for my coffee-maker. Most particularly, the person who made the timer mechanism usable for tech-challenged like me. What a wonderful thing to wake up in the morning to find that I've got a nice fresh pot of hot coffee waiting for me to pour that first cup of the day....if I remember to set it up sometime during the previous day. All I need to do is grab a clean coffee cup....not a problem. I have two coffee-makers here in Arizona. Wonderful! Actually, HTP and I only bought the second coffee-maker because HTP and I thought the first coffee-maker had croaked, died, shuffled off this mortal coil, headed to the junkyard. However, HTP is not tech-challenged. He took the first coffee-maker (broken) and fixed it...brought it back to life. Woohoo! So, I've got two fully functioning coffee-makers. So...anyway, with two coffee-makers, I can always have one coffee-maker set for delayed brew for the next morning's coffee or ready to switch to immediate brew if HTP and I NEED more than one pot of coffee during the day. Of course, should this happen, I immediately set up the other coffee-maker for delayed brew for the next morning. I love waking up to a fresh pot of coffee.

Gypsy Loves Santa - 2007

Word of the Day

Murfed - To be victimized by Mr. Murphy of Murphy's Law.

I'm taking Gypsy into the groomers later today. They just called to let me know that they don't have her updated shot records. Since I don't have a hard copy of her updated records, I told them to call the vet...which...thankfully, they didn't seem to mind. With grooming on my mind, I searched the entire house for the card that the gal at the beauty parlor gave me last time I got my hair cut. It was in the last place I looked...of course, but it took me an hour to find it. After making an appointment for tomorrow, I took the card and made a refrigerator magnet out of it so I wouldn't have to spend so much time finding it next time. Now...the question is, will I remember that it's on the fridge next time I need to make an appointment?

HTP and I sent out the last of our Christmas cards yesterday. Unfortunately, I've already got one card sent back to me (addressee unknown). Turns out that I didn't do as thorough a job of editing the Christmas card address file as was necessary.
One of the Marine Mom's sent me the updated address list and I still didn't get things right. I'm not sending Christmas packages to my Marine Moms this year but I at least hoped to get cards out to them all. Oh well... If at first you don't succeed, try...try again.

Murckle - The action of moving a mouse in a squiggly circling motion in order to find it on one's display, or to remove the screensaver.

We got enough rain last night so that Gypsy didn't want to "do her thing" out in the backyard this morning. My spoiled little girl doesn't like getting her feet wet. It wasn't even raining! I finally had to clip a leash on her and drag her out into the front yard where the ground wasn't as wet.

It looks like we may finally get some freezing weather this week....and in the coming weeks. My plants will be fine for tonight but it looks like I'll have to drag out my spare sheets and cover things up tomorrow night. I can bring my herb pots inside but my hibiscus and my rubber tree and milk cactus and my lantana and will need to be covered. I'll also have to cover the annuals that I planted when we got back here in October too. Over the last five years since we've lived at this house, I've gradually replaced the plants that couldn't and didn't survive the cold winter temperatures with plants and trees that don't mind the colder temperatures that I'm sure are a result of global warming....or the normal desert summer temperatures but I'll have to protect the ones that remain frost sensitive....the plants that have survived due to my annual sheet dances.

MC Daughter and DD Daughter with Santa - 1983?

Word of the Day

Muggle - To smother or cover completely. Used mainly when one is muggling another, or completely smothering someone with signs of affection, but to their annoyance.

I didn't forget to blog. It's just that I got distracted. I had an orchestra practice this morning and then after that I had to go over the music for the third service at church and then after that I played with the contemporary group for the third service. Three hours of playing a clarinet can take it out of you. And then I had to stop at the store to pick up some fresh milk and some bread. It was time for lunch by the time I got home.

After lunch, I started reading a book and even though I was going to blog before I sat down to read my book, I forgot. So, here it's already almost supper time and I can't think of anything to blog about but....blog.

MC Daughter and DD Daughter with Santa - 1982?

Word of the Day

Muckle - To smother with something sticky or dirty. To muckle something up, as to mess it up completely.

I've got music. The music director's husband (our pastor) dropped it off for me yesterday. It doesn't look too difficult. I suppose I should put my clarinet together today and run through the music at least once but...we'll see. It's going to be a full day at church tomorrow. I've got an orchestra practice at 8 AM, and then I'll be playing with the contemporary group for the third service. I have no idea what I'll do with myself during the second service. There really isn't enough time to make a round-trip home and back during that second service. Actually, that might be the best time for me to practice the music for the third service.

I started my policy of gifting wine and jam instead of baked goods yesterday. I made up a basket with a small bottle of Rhubarb wine and a small bottle of Dandelion wine along with a jar of my sugar-free raspberry jam and a jar of my sugar-free strawberry jam. When the pastor dropped my music off for me, I gave the basket to him. Merry Christmas. When I told him that he'd have to wait until next spring to drink the wine, he wanted to know why. Would it be bad? I told him that it wouldn't be bad but it would be better in the spring. The wine that I gave him was the 2008 wine that Sis and I bottled in September. It'll be better to let it mature a bit in the bottle...at least until the dandelions start blooming again.

MC Daughter, DD Daughter and Santa - 1981?

Word of the Day

Mozzalastics - Large deposits of cheese that stick to the top of the pizza box.

Free stuff. HTP and I went out to get our free flu and pneumonia shots today. Actually, they were only "free" because HTP and I have health insurance. When you figure in the cost of what we pay for our monthly health insurance premiums, I'm not sure if you could consider the shots as "free". Oh well...they didn't cost us any additional money over and above our monthly health insurance premiums. However, while we were at the store where we got shot(s), I purchased some toothpaste for HTP (on sale 2/$4). The guy at the register overcharged me so I got the toothpaste for free.

I haven't started doing any Christmas baking. Actually, after discussing this over lunch today with HTP, I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to do any Christmas baking this year. HTP and I don't need the additional calories. Besides, I can just as well gift wine or liqueur to the neighbors.

Gypsy with Santa - Christmas 2007

Word of the Day

Mousecurser - Someone who shouts at a mouse for overshooting the intended target.

I finished up all but one of the Christmas cards this morning, before and after breakfast. The "but one" is a card that I plan to send to one of my nephews but he moved this summer and I don't have his new address. Since I only just e-mailed Sis to ask for the new address before I sat down to blog, I'm sure I'll be able to get this last Christmas card finished up by tomorrow. No rush.

The house is decorated for Christmas....inside and out. Inside...my Charlie Brown tree is up and decorated with some of the homemade ornaments that HTP's Mom made for us when we first got married, along with some of the ornaments our children made when they were in pre-school and elementary school. I still plan to put out a couple of my snow globes and hang my needlepoint and crewel work pictures but that's all I plan to do when it comes to decorating the interior of the house. I figure the more I take out, the more I'll have to put away.

As far as the exterior decorating, I've got my faux poinsettias outside the front door along with the two large toy soldiers and the two small toy soldiers that my daughters and I made from clay pots one year. Think Nutcracker Suite....not GI Joe. Anyway, they've become a tradition, even though they're starting to look a bit tattered. The carriage lights have been switched out for green party lights and decked with red bows.

Gypsy is thrilled to see her Christmas toys again. I'd stored them away after Christmas last year and she was as excited as if I'd bought her some brand new toys...which makes me think that maybe I should pack up and store away some of her other toys for a few months and then present them to her as brand new toys. She'd never know the difference. Anyway, she was busily seeing if she could chew the stuffing out of her Santa Claus this morning but so far, his stitching seems to be holding.

DD Daughter, Me, and Santa - 1980 (MC Daughter is there too but she wouldn't put in an appearance for a couple more months.)

Word of the Day

Mousecurse - A curse afflicting a user whose mouse pointer deliberately overshoots its intended target as many as a dozen times in a row.

I dug out my Christmas socks. When you can only wear something at one particular time of the year, I figure you shouldn't miss the opportunity. So, I was wearing my Christmas socks AND my Christmas sweater this morning when I took Gypsy for our morning training walk.

I finally hung my Christmas wreath on the front door. I decided that since the neighbors seem to have decked the exterior of their home for Christmas, I should get into the spirit of the season too. Besides, when Gypsy and I returned home after our walk this morning, the front door looked a bit bare. I'll tackle the rest of the exterior decorations after it warms up a bit.

In the meantime, I plan to get the creche out and set up. I may dig out a couple of my snow globes too....maybe. As for baking?....that will have to wait for another day. I've got ingredients, I just don't have the energy. Besides, I don't want the temptation or the calories.

My focus will be on the Christmas letter and Christmas cards in the coming days. I'm hoping to get my cards all addressed and in the mail...next week? HTP and bought our Christmas stamps. I have to do a final edit of my Christmas letter. I have to edit my Christmas address book before having HTP print out the letter and the address labels. Sadly, we lost some of our family members this year. Some of our family members have moved.

DD Daughter - 1979

Word of the Day

Motodrift - The mistaken belief at a stoplight that ones car is moving backward when, actually, the car beside them is moving forward.

I dug my Christmas sweater out of the closet and wore it this morning when I took Gypsy for our training walk. I'm starting to teach her the "down" command. Of course, she pops right back up the second I'm not forcing her to lie down but...it's a start.

Speaking of starts, I'm starting to force myself into getting ready for Christmas. I wrote the annual Christmas letter last night and will probably spend the next few days revising and editing. I also compiled a bunch of Christmas photos from the past and downloaded them into the digital picture frame the kids got us last Christmas. I copied the pictures that I had previously downloaded to the picture frame into a file on my computer so it'll be easier to load them back up after Christmas.

I still haven't decorated the exterior of the house. Maybe I'll tackle that chore after lunch. We'll see. It really doesn't take all that much effort to hang a wreath on the door but....I wouldn't want to do too much in one day. I figure that by Christmas, whatever gets done, gets done.

DD Daughter - Christmas 1978

Word of the Day

Motate - To leave.

Sometimes I wish I had more than just one set of hands attached to arms...oh....and they'd have to be functioning and I should be able to tuck them away where I won't be providing anyone with their own personal freak show on a daily basis or get in the way when I don't need them but... I strained out the pulp from my pyracantha wine yesterday. First of all, I discovered that my strainer bags only fit on my 3 gallon buckets. Since all my 3 gallon buckets had pyracantha wine in them that needed straining, I had to make do with trying to juggle and pour the wine from one 3 gallon bucket into a straining bag that kept collapsing that was sitting in my 5 gallon bucket. Not an easy task. And then....the recipe called for letting the stuff drip for 45 minutes, which meant that I'd either have had to hold the bag up for 45 minutes as it dripped slowly into the 5 gallon bucket or find some other way of accomplishing the same thing without standing around for that length of time. You know...I really should buy some sort of tripod for this sort of thing but since I didn't have anything like that, I transferred the strainer bag of pulp into a large colander which I stuck over a stew pot because the colander wasn't big enough to rest on the lip of the 5 gallon bucket. So...I quickly washed out the 3 gallon bucket while the bag of pulp was sitting in the colander so I could rest the colander over the lip of the 3 gallon bucket where it did fit. Meanwhile, during all this transferring etc. you can imagine that I ended up with drips of wine all over my kitchen floor...and this was for just the first bucket that had to be strained. Oh well, I syphoned the strained wine (to which I had added additional sugar as per my recipe) into a large 5 gallon fermentation jug and started the straining process for the second 3 gallon bucket of pyracantha wine...and then 45 minutes later, the third 3 gallon bucket. After the initial bucket, the remaining buckets were easier to deal with because I had freed up one 3 gallon bucket so I didn't have to worry about the "straining bag that didn't fit into the 5 gallon bucket" issue. After all was said and done, sugar added and blended, I ended up with over 10 gallons of pyracantha wine (can you call it wine if it isn't done yet?)....pulp discarded. Thankfully, my one and only 5 gallon fermentation bucket holds closer to six gallons with a good 2" of head space remaining or I would have been in trouble. My 5 gallon fermentation jug (a Water 'n Ice water jug) only holds 5 gallons, max....no leeway, no head space. When Water 'n Ice sells you 5 gallons of water, that's all you get because they don't figure that water will create gases building up or that said water will start foaming all over your carpet. When you make wine, you need to worry about such things. Ask Sis. Ask Sis' son who called her at The Lake one year, frantically describing the disaster she had foaming all over her laundry room and asking her what he should do about it. From what I heard, the fruit flies were having a drunken orgy. She told him to break up the orgy and clean up the mess....but not to dump the wine. Sis tells me that the resultant wine did end up tasting pretty good. I'm sure she strained out any fruit flies that had expired during the orgy. I don't think I'll have to worry about fruit flies but...I did end up having to mop the kitchen floor even though Gypsy was busy trying to clean up any drips that she could find.
