Word of the Day

Alliterate - Having the ability to read but choosing not to. Not to be mistaken with those who are illiterate, and can not read.

Things are starting to heat up outside. It's supposed to get up into the 90's this week. Despite all that, I'm hoping to avoid using the air-conditioner. It's not all that hot as yet. HTP and I are just beginning to use the time-honored tricks for keeping a home cool. Tricks that we both learned from our youth. Although, air-conditioning existed when HTP and I were young, neither of us actually had air-conditioning in our homes back in Minnesota where we grew up. At least, my family had air-conditioning (a window air-conditioner) but not until I was in the last years of high school. We did without. The trick for keeping a house cool is to open up windows at night after the temperatures outside have cooled more than the temperature inside the house. Then...the next day, when temperatures outside start to climb, close all the windows and pull the shades. Works every time...until the temperatures get up past 100'F and the temperatures at night don't go down past 86'F. That's when air-conditioning comes into play. In Minnesota, temperatures rarely reached the 100'F mark. It was a heck of a lot easier to keep things cool back in Minnesota. On the other hand, keeping warm in Minnesota during the winter was a bit more challenging.
